Drywall Finishing & Skim Coating in Gulfport, MS | Level 4, Level 5 & Smooth-Over-Texture
A room is won or lost in the mud. Board goes up in a day; the taping, three coats, and sanding that turn twenty seams into one wall take the rest of the week, and that is where coastal drywall usually falls short: starved seams, screw dimples, ridges that only show at 4 p.m. Gulfport Drywall Repair finishes new sheetrock, ours or anyone else’s, and skims old walls smooth.
Finish levels are quoted by the Gypsum Association scale, so the word "finished" on your estimate means a specific thing.

What level 4 covers
Tape set in compound, two more coats over every seam and screw, corners and bead built up, everything sanded flat. Under flat or eggshell paint in ordinary light it is all a room needs, and it is the level built into our installation pricing.
When level 5 is worth it
A room with a wall of windows facing the Sound gets raked by low sun twice a day, and every seam under a level 4 finish will show at those hours. Level 5 skims the entire surface so paper and compound take paint identically. Same answer for semi-gloss, deep colors, and ceilings with a row of recessed cans. It is the upgrade people wish they had bought after the painter leaves.
Taking a textured wall to smooth
Buyers renovating a 1970s ranch in Bayou View or Diamondhead often want the orange peel gone. High spots get knocked off, two or three thin coats go over the whole wall, and it is sanded flat. The same skim rescues a rental wall that a decade of tenants turned into a patchwork, and it is the second half of every popcorn ceiling removal.
Drying in August
Compound cures by evaporation, and a Gulfport August does not cooperate. Fans run, and when a schedule is tight we switch to setting-type compound that hardens chemically instead of waiting on the air. Sanding happens behind plastic with a vacuum sander, so the dust stays in the room it came from.
Drywall Finishing & Skim Coating FAQs
What is the difference between level 4 and level 5?
Level 4 finishes seams and fasteners; standard for most rooms. Level 5 skims the entire surface for gloss paint, dark colors, and strong side light such as a room facing the Gulf.
How many days is a finish job?
Coats dry one at a time and coastal humidity drags that out. Plan on three or four short visits spread over about a week for a typical room; setting compound can compress it when the calendar demands.
Can you skim a textured wall smooth?
Yes. Knockdown and orange peel skim flat in two or three coats; popcorn ceilings are scraped first, then skimmed.
