Coats dry one at a time and coastal humidity drags that out. Plan on three or four short visits spread over about a week for a typical room; setting compound can compress it when the calendar demands.
Can you skim a textured wall smooth?
Yes. Knockdown and orange peel skim flat in a couple of passes; popcorn ceilings are scraped first, then skimmed.
