Mold-Resistant Drywall Replacement in Gulfport, MS | Purple Board for Bathrooms, Laundries & Exterior Walls

A Gulfport bathroom spends eight months a year above 70 percent humidity. Standard paper-faced drywall in that room, behind a shower without a fan, softens, bubbles, and grows mold behind the paint without a single dramatic leak. Gulfport Drywall Repair replaces those walls with mold- and moisture-resistant board and puts the ventilation problem on the estimate so it does not happen again.

This is the most common repair we do in older homes north of the tracks and in condos along Highway 90.

Which board goes where

Mold-resistant board, the purple product with a fiberglass-faced or treated core, on bathroom, laundry, and utility walls. Cement board, not green board, behind tile in a shower or tub surround. Standard board is fine in bedrooms and living areas. Green moisture-resistant board is an older middle option we use less now. We list the board type on every line of the estimate.

The signs, before it is obvious

Paint bubbling in a band a foot or two above the floor. A musty smell that comes back after cleaning. Tape lifting at the seam behind the toilet. A wall that feels cooler than the one beside it. Any of those in a bathroom is worth a meter reading before it turns into a ceiling repair for the room below.

Ventilation is part of the repair

Half the bathrooms we rebuild had no exhaust fan, or a fan venting into the attic. New board buys time; a fan that moves the wet air outside solves the problem. We note the fan situation on the estimate and can coordinate with an electrician if one is needed. We would rather you fix the air than call us again in three years.

Exterior walls and slab edges

On raised homes and slab homes alike, the lowest foot of an exterior wall sees the most moisture. New board stops short of the slab by half an inch so it has nothing to wick from, gets a mold-resistant face on the weather side, and look for the flashing or grading problem that let the water in when the old board comes out.

Mold-Resistant Drywall Replacement: straight answers

How much does it cost to replace a bathroom wall with mold-resistant drywall?

Roughly $650 to $2,200 depending on how many walls, whether tile and cement board are involved, and how much drying the framing needs. Ballpark; the estimate is itemized after we open it up.

Is purple board really different?

Yes. Standard drywall has a paper face that feeds mold when it stays damp. Mold-resistant board uses a treated or fiberglass face and core that does not. In a Gulfport bathroom it is the difference between ten years and three.

Can you just treat the mold and paint?

On the surface, briefly. If the board has softened or the growth is behind the paint, the gypsum is compromised and painting over it hides a problem that keeps growing.
